The incidence of displaced families is growing in our community as rents increase and the number of affordable housing units shrink. Often possessions are the first things that are lost, those items that help us feel secure and cared for. The Blankets of Hope program is sponsored by Recovery Beyond Paradigm. Each new family that enters Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (UGM) Hope Place or Tacoma Rescue Mission, a shelter for women, men, and their children, is given a customized blanket when they arrive. These blankets become a unique sign of caring and love, helping new residents feel welcome and ready to begin the recovery program. Blankets of Hope provides not only a symbol of security but a needed sense of warmth and safety, a feeling of having arrived home.
Your monetary gift allows us to reach out with a loving and supportive gift when needed most.
After arriving at Hope Place, the program works to provide emergency housing for these displaced families. Leaving behind a past, no matter how bad, is traumatizing for the entire family. Adults recovering from substance abuse are turning away from the only “comfort” they knew. The children may be suffering from a lack of proper care and abuse.
Women and children fleeing from a home of abuse are confused, scared, and sad. Children are leaving behind their personal belongings as well as everything they knew as comfort including friends and school mates.
Loss of employment is a downward spiral of hopelessness and insecurity for the entire family. Families may be forced to live in a car or in a tent pitched at the side of the road. The anxiety of the family being broken up and the children placed in foster care leads to worry, stress, and anxiety.
Homelessness can be the result of;
- Domestic violence
- Substance abuse
- Loss of income due to employment due to cutbacks
- Physical and mental health issues which affect a person’s employment
The Blankets of Hope Program seeks to provide comfort for the entire family as their lives are in transition. Here are some benefits:
- The blanket is a transitional object especially for times of upheaval
- The blanket provides a sense of reassurance and moral support in unfamiliar situations
- The blanket helps a person feel at ease by providing instant comfort
- The blanket helps facilitate the relationship with touch and feel helping to ease anxiety and stress
- The “Security Blanket” is essential to mental and emotional well being
People have a greater level of attachment to something if they own it. Personalization of the blankets establishes ownership and also gives a sense of “control” to its owner. This kind of control is healthy especially when everything else in their lives seems so out of control.
God Offers Comfort to All.
“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
2 Corinthians 1: 4
