Michele Arnold is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician. Dr. Arnold graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University (1995), obtained her M.D. from Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine (1999), then completed her residency in PM&R at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (2003) where she served as chief resident.
Everything was going according to plan.
Until it wasn’t.
In 2005, Michele’s uneventful 2nd pregnancy turned mournful after the unexpected stillbirth of her daughter, Camille Hope. She recalls how grief made her feel broken and ashamed and caused her to question her faith and her value as a mother.
Two months later, Michele and her husband, Jon, were encouraged to join a crew on a summit attempt of Mt. Harvard (14,420’), led by an experienced church elder who’d served with Colorado Search and Rescue. Wholly inexperienced yet fueled by determination and supported by a great team, Michele and Jon summited their first ‘fourteener’. It was a lesson in how teamwork, love, encouragement, perseverance, and patience can overcome brokenness. Michele was able to grieve the loss of her daughter in the full knowledge that everything was indeed going ‘according to Plan.’ Thus began a love of mountaineering and ‘summiteering’.
From 2005 to 2013, Michele joined with friends and church members to summit the Colorado fourteeners, led in part by the passion of a pastor’s wife who chronicled her journeys in a now-published journal. Michele led a group of her own in 2012, enabling her 10-year-old daughter, Brielle, to summit her first fourteener. Now more than 30 fourteeners and countless summits later, she enjoys sharing her passion and wishes to lead others to a place of empowerment.
Dr. Arnold moved to Washington State and joined Swedish Medical Group in 2013, where she currently serves as the Executive Director of the Swedish Rehabilitation and Performance Medicine, as well as chief of Swedish PM&R. She maintains subspecialties in Neuromuscular Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
Michele lives in Issaquah, WA with her husband, Jon, and two daughters, Brielle Grace and Autumn Joy. When she’s not working or hiking, she enjoys running, traveling, downhill skiing, and listening to loud music while driving her MINI Cooper with the windows down. She endeavors to summit all 58 of the Colorado Fourteeners and to always carry a meaningful song in her head on the ascent. You can find her Mountain Mix on Spotify here.
