Recreation Volunteers

  • Soccer Lead
    This volunteer facilitates soccer practices and games for members on playfields throughout Seattle. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to play in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Soccer Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Facilitates a minimum of 1 weekly, 1-hour practice a month (3 month commitment) 
      • Must have previously attended 1 session as Community Recreation Volunteer
      • Required skills: athletic training experience, athletic training certifications preferred
      • Experience with outdoor leadership, CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus
  • Crossfit Lead
    This volunteer facilitates crossfit workouts for members at South Seattle Crossfit. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to be physically challenged in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Crossfit Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Facilitates a minimum of 1 weekly, 1-hour workout a month (3 month commitment) 
      • Must have previously attended 1 session as Community Recreation Volunteer
      • Required skills: crossfit certification 
      • Experience with CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus
  • Bouldering Lead
    This volunteer facilitates bouldering sessions for members at Seattle Bouldering Project. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to be challenged in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Bouldering Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Facilitates a minimum of 1 weekly, 1.5-hour session a month (3 month commitment) 
      • Must have previously attended 1 session as Community Recreation Volunteer
      • Experience with CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus  
      • Climbing experience a plus but not required
  • City Walks Lead
    This volunteer facilitates walks for members in various parks and neighborhoods throughout Seattle. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to get outside in a convenient and meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.City Walks Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Facilitates a minimum of 1 weekly, 1-hour walk a month (3 month commitment) 
      • Must have previously attended 1 session as Community Recreation Volunteer
      • Experience with outdoor leadership, CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus
  • Community Recreation Volunteer
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by attending recreation events alongside Recovery Beyond members in Seattle. Your main role will be there as a positive, emotionally supportive individual. Consider how you could make the most impact in this way. Community Recreation Responsibilities

      • Encouragement and positive recovery support to all
      • Communicates closely with the Recreation Lead 
      • Aids in sharing our website, fundraising campaigns, and social media channels with others

Hiking Volunteers

  • Hike Lead
    This volunteer facilitates hike outings for members on various hiking trails throughout the state of Washington. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to get outside in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Hike Lead Responsibilities

      • Commits to leading 5 hikes per calendar year
      • Communicates closely with the Recovery Beyond Senior Program Manager
      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Facilitates pre-hike leaders huddle (includes medical volunteer/s)
      • Acts as the Incident Commander for any emergency during an outing
      • Must have previously attended 1 hike as Hike Assistant
      • Coordinates with Senior Program Manager for radios, medkits, sign-in sheet, table and tent.
      • Experience with outdoor leadership, CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus
  • Hike Assistant
    This volunteer supports the Hike Lead in facilitating safe and fun hikes throughout Washington state. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to get outside in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Hike Assistant Responsibilities 

      • Act as hike “sweeper” for their assigned hikes. 
      • Commits to being a Hike Assistant for 5 hikes per calendar year 
      • Communicates closely with the Hike Lead and RB Senior Program Manager
      • Supports facilitating sign-ins at the trailhead 
      • Attends pre-hike leaders huddle (includes medical volunteer/s) 
      • Aids with radios, med-kits, sign-in sheet, table and tent set-up
      • Must have previously attended 1 hike as Community Hiker
      • Experience with outdoor leadership, CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus
  • Community Hiker
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by attending monthly hike outings alongside Recovery Beyond members on various trails. Through taking on this role, you will be assisting the Hike Lead and other leaders as needed. Your main role is to be a positive, emotionally supportive individual. Consider how you could make the most impact in this way. You will be asked to provide snacks and coffee for after the hike. This role allows all RB members to get outside in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Community Hiker Responsibilities

      • Encouragement and positive recovery support to all
      • Commits to bringing coffee and snacks after 2 hikes per calendar year
      • Communicates closely with the Hike Lead and Hike Assistant 
      • Aids in sharing our website, fundraising campaigns, and social media channels with others
      • Outdoor leadership experience a plus
  • Backpack Lead
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by being the lead instructor and facilitator for our yearly backpack trip. This volunteer leadership role allows all Recovery Beyond participants to get out into the wilderness in a meaningful way.Backpack Lead Responsibilities

      • Planning, preparing, and facilitating yearly backpack trip (trip logistics, gear preparation)
      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Aids in scheduling gear room “Pick-Up” & “Drop-Offs” for participants (see schedule)
      • Gear check & wilderness education prior to trip
      • Communicates closely with Recovery Beyond Senior Program Manager and backpacking assistants
      • Weekly check-in meetings leading up to the trip
      • Required skills: previous outdoor/guiding experience, minimum CPR/First Aid Certification, knowledge about wilderness preparedness, knowledgeable about mental health issues
  • Backpack Assistant
    This volunteer supports the Backpack Lead volunteer in facilitating a safe and fun excursion. This role is critical and allows all Recovery Beyond members to get outside in a meaningful way and thrive in their recovery.Backpack Assistant Responsibilities 

      • Act as “sweeper” for the trip
      • Communicates closely with the Backpack Lead and RB Senior Program Manager
      • Assists with gear preparation before and after trip
      • Experience with outdoor leadership, CPR/First Aid, and knowledge of mental health related issues a plus

Social Volunteers

  • Circle Lead
    We offer folks the space to speak and be heard in our Community Circle; a space where we come together and share what is good and new in our lives. It is an exercise of giving and receiving attention with one another and provides a foundation of strength from which we can tackle difficulties. Through meeting monthly over a 6-month initial commitment period, these leaders provide an extra layer of friendship and support. This volunteer role aids all Recovery Beyond participants to be better supported in their recovery and thrive to life beyond.Circle Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins
      • The person who starts the circle and provides support for the circle community’s communication. The lead does not teach, but helps the members talk with each other with respect, dignity and mutual concern
      • Openness, encouragement, and support in circle
      • Commit to bring beverage and snack
  • Social Lead
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by providing recovery support, encouragement, and fun to a Recovery Beyond member. By attending social events, you will strengthen friendships and facilitate a great time for all. Social Lead Responsibilities

      • Facilitates sign-ins, briefs, and debriefs
      • Encouragement and positive recovery support to all
      • Aids in sharing our website, fundraising campaigns, and social media channels with others

Medical Volunteers

  • Medical Director
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by being staffed as the leader of all medical volunteers. Safety and emergency-preparedness is a top priority at RB. The medical director is responsible for reviewing Recovery Beyond’s Medical P&P,  reviewing and updating Recovery Beyond medical supplies, and staffing/maintaining a volunteer medical team. Working with the Senior Program Manager is imperative. This volunteer role allows all participants to get out into the wilderness in a meaningful and safe way.Medical Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Review and advise all Recovery Beyond’s Medical Policies and Procedures
      • Review and update Recovery Beyond medical supplies, med-kits
      • Review all medical histories with medical volunteers
      • Staff medical volunteers on hikes and other expeditions
      • On-call contact during all Recovery Beyond outdoor events
      • Solicit WFR/WFA/CPR certification donations (free or % discount)
      • Attends all Recovery Beyond Volunteer Medical Orientations.
      • Required skills: previous outdoor/guiding experience, medical professional (DR/NP/RN), knowledgeable about wilderness preparedness, knowledgeable about mental health related issues
  • Medical Volunteer
    This volunteer position contributes to Recovery Beyond’s success by offering medical support on outings. Safety and emergency-preparedness is a top priority when we head outside. The medical volunteer is responsible for all medical communications, medical supplies, and medical decision making on the day of the event in which they are staffed. Working with the Medical Director and Senior Program Manager is imperative. This volunteer role allows all Recovery Beyond participants to get out into the wilderness in a meaningful and safe way.Medical Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Commit to being staffed as the medical volunteer for at least 5 hikes per calendar year
      • Review safety plan and medical procedures during the briefing/debriefing at each hike/event in which they are “staffed”
      • Distributes/collects med kits to all leaders before/after each event they are staffed
      • Attends all Recovery Beyond Volunteer Medical Orientations
      • Required skills: WFR/WFA certifications, knowledgeable about wilderness preparedness

Outreach

  • Storyteller
    This volunteer position is important in telling our story. If you enjoy writing and talking to program members/volunteers about their experiences; then this role is for you. Your stories will grace our webpage and other promotional materials. A background in marketing and public relations is a plus. You are a part of a unique volunteer group, supporting the efforts of Recovery Beyond through creating a compelling story about our organization. Get creative with exciting others about our people and programs. Examples would include: tracking or releasing news stories and newsletters, writing bios, developing marketing campaigns, fundraising materials and program data sheets and brochures.Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Create written content around what we are doing, our people and our programs
      • Document specific Recovery Beyond activities
      • Review Recovery Beyond media content and deliver feedback
      • Create one 1 written piece or blog per quarter
  • Social Media Team
    This volunteer position is key to getting the Recovery Beyond message out through our social channels. Use your network as a dynamic tool to share our story. We’ll notify you when a specific post goes live and ask for your help in amplifying the message whether it be for awareness, donations, or just plain fun. You are a part of a unique volunteer group, supporting the efforts of RB through creating buzz and social growth. Get creative with it! Interest and use of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, or other networks are all welcome.Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Share specific Recovery Beyond posts/media with your social network
      • Review Recovery Beyond media content and deliver feedback
      • Share 2 creative ways to expand Recovery Beyond’s social media reach
      • Take on 1 social media project in the calendar year
      • Learn RB branding, RB language and keywords, RB marketing strategy 
      • Required skills: experience with social media, desire to grow and expand Recovery Beyond’s social presence and awareness
  • Fundraising Volunteer
    This role is critically important to our organization. We need assistance with identifying donors, grants, corporations who are interested in supporting our cause and willing to commit funding. This role should be comfortable with approaching and requesting donations and referrals to other potential donors or organizations.Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Talking about our mission and goals and asking for support
      • Identify contacts who would contribute to our people and our programs
      • Help to identify corporations, granting organizations who would help fund our programs
      • Encourage and support others in fundraising efforts
  • Membership Recruiter
    This volunteer position is key to getting the Recovery Beyond message out to those in recovery. Use your network as a dynamic tool to share our story and invite those with at least 72 hours of sobriety to join us.Volunteer Responsibilities

      • Share specific Recovery Beyond posts/media with your social network
      • If you attend AA/NA meetings, share our story with your group

Review Volunteer Expectations

As a volunteer, we want you to have a great experience and to support our entire community on the road to long-lasting sobriety. Whether you are in recovery yourself, or support recovery, we have a space for you. Thank you for your interest and future commitment to Recovery Beyond!

Here are the expectations we have for our volunteers. Please see the job descriptions for details about each role.

  1. For recreation based volunteering, there are a limited amount of spaces for each position and event. After submitting your application, we will be in touch with how to sign up for activities.
  2. Before you begin any volunteering, we do ask you to wait until a Recovery Beyond representative reaches out to you, confirming your volunteer assignment, giving you more specific training and details.
  3. Quarterly, we hold a “Volunteer Orientation”. We do ask that you attend this in the quarter that you signed up. If you can not make it, or the orientation has occurred, please make a point to attend the next orientation.
  4. Honor your commitment to our program.
  5. Cooperate with the Recovery Beyond staff and fellow volunteers.
  6. Be prompt and reliable.
  7. Notify us of any changes to your commitment as a volunteer.
  8. Keep online portal up-to-date.
  9. Keep all communications with or concerning the recovery members confidential.
  10. Maintain a respectful relationship with all recovery members.
  11. Sign-in to each event to help us track volunteer hours.
    1. In some cases your employers may match volunteer hours with donations, please inform us if we need to supply any documentation to facilitate this process.
